I nodded, was it wrong for me to share this with a friend. " Severus......." I tried to get into his train of thought, " The lake..." I said with a nod figuring that's where he was most of the time. So it was a good place to start. " I just wish I understood why he left after I shared it with him..." I whispered. I mean, its a happy time or I thought. " I shared it...he's a friend...so I didn't see what was wrong." How could I have been so blind...or it couldn't have been.

Severus grabbed a rock and threw it as hard as he could into the lake, trying to vent some of the disbelief and anger out before he went back to talk to Lily again. "It's not right!" he yelled, his voice echoing. "None of this is right...what am I, chopped liver? This is another prank...let's get Greasy Snivellus all over again! Isn't that right?" he shouted to no one. From behind him, birds flew out of a tree, startled by the sudden noise. After a couple minutes of yelling and throwing rocks, he slumped onto a nearby rock, exhausted, the thought of Lily marrying Potter flying through his mind. He wanted to deny it, but couldn't. Lily was slipping out--had already slipped out of--his reach. He could never have her, as much as he might want it. He had lost...Potter had won. It wasn't fair.

I nodded, hearing some shouting, " I think we've found him..." Isaid to Betta, spotted Severus near the water. " Let's go." I said as we walked towards him hearing the shouting of it's not fair. My brows furrowed.

Now what am I aupposed to do? thought Severus, fighting back more tears. I never thought it would come to this, even though she and Potter have been inseparable as of recently. Maybe I'm just stupid. Yeah, that must be it. I'm not a Quidditch player, I don't have the swagger that Potter has...all I am is a target for people's pranks.

He was about to throw another rock into the lake when he heard footsteps behind him; whirling around, he spotted Lily and Betta making their way toward him.

Damn! he thought. She's come to rub it in. That's all I need.

" Severus!" I said loudly so he heard me. I think I knew what his problem was. At least I thought. Though, I never saw it before. I just saw him as a friend. but it was my fault I never really told him. Was he really this upset that I got engaged? Maybe I should get Betta to do a standby possibly. No Icouldn't ask her to do that. " Severus..." I said softly as we got closer to him. " You're not okay...so we came to see why not."

"I'm perfectly okay. No need to worry about me." Severus replied, feeling his body trembling, though from what, he had no idea. "I just wanted to come sit by the lake. You know me...Mr. Nature Lover and all. How are you, Betta? Have you come to rub it in, too?"

"That's not fair, Severus! We came down here because we're concerned about you, that's all! Believe it or not, some people do care for you!" Betta exclaimed, hurt. "Would you please listen to us? Or Lily, I should say?

"What's there to listen to?" Severus replied. "Betta...you don't understand. You'll never understand, so don't even try. In fact, why don't you go back up to the castle? I'm sure Dolohov's waiting for you. Better get back before he sends out a search party."

Betta stared at him, unable to believe what she'd just heard. "You want me to...with Antonin...?" she whispered, her voice choking up. "How can you say that when all I want to do is--"

"Leave me alone, blood traitor!" Severus shouted, watching Betta cringe. "If Lily wants to talk, she can talk, but as for you, I'm not sure I want to hear what you have to say!"

"Severus, I love you." Betta whispered. "I know that this is a lost cause, but I love you. You don't want me here...at least listen to Lily. Please." Saying this, she walked off to a secluded spot by the lake and started weeping quietly.

I love him. How come I didn't realize this before now? she thought. It'll never happen, though. I can love him until the day I die and it won't make a difference.

" Alright this isn't you...what are you doing?" I asked him. this was not the Severus we both knew. We wanted to make sure you were all right..." I sighed, " that's the way it gets handled. C'mon Severus.." I said angrily, pulling my hair to my one shoulder I sat down on the grass. " Apparently I thought wrong in telling you I guess...." I said simply. Betta has liked him for as long as I can remember now. It was just ridiculous he was treating her the way he was. It was stupid.

"Engaged?" Severus said again, looking at Lily. "After all that...I mean, everything we've been through...engaged?" Severus said, his black eyes flashing. "I don't understand it, I really don't." He sat back down and glared out at the lake. "To Potter? Are you kidding me? What is it about him? The fact that he's a Quidditch player? Oh wow, there's a rarity. You don't find very many Quidditch players around these days, do you?"

Severus put his face in his hands for a moment, trying to calm down. "For the life of me, Lily, I will never understand what you see in that...that...Merlin's beard, there isn't a name strong enough to describe Potter!" He looked over at Betta, who was now looking back at him, her eyes red. "I'm aware that she likes me. She hasn't exactly been the most subtle of people; her thoughts are written all over her face."

Unknown to either Lily or Betta, Antonin had followed the two girls down to the lake. He stayed behind a tree until he saw Betta go off several yards from Lily and Severus, then followed her to where she was sitting.

"Elisabetta. May I sit down?" he asked, all traces of sarcasm gone. "You don't look so good. What happened?"

"Go ahead and sit." Betta said dully, glad to have some company at that point, even if it was Antonin. "It's Severus...he's acting so weird!" she exclaimed, feeling more tears roll down her face. "He called me 'blood traitor'! I don't know what I ever did to him, Antonin! It doesn't make sense..."
