The Start of Something New - September 1991

I beam brightly at her. "I have never had a friend before, thank you!" I say gratefully. My eyes were starting to sting with unshed tears.

"'I don't believe that for a minute but if it is true, I'm honoured to be your first." I smiled at her, happy that I could make her happy. I just hoped Draco would understand when I hung out with her more and won't tell Father. I figured the former was more understanding then the latter.

Looking down at where our hands met, I mumbled "it is true... You are my first friend. When I went to primary school in the muggle world, no one wanted to be friends with the freaky girl. After that, I never really went out of my way to make a friend. Until now of course" I smile up at her. "I don't know why, but this feels different than trying to be friends with other people. To me it feels like I am comfortable with you, like I have known you forever."

"I feel the same way." I said with a smile. Why else would I've brought up family willingly? "You're not a freak, just different, like everyone is here. And it's their loss."

I grin at her. "My sister always says that you are only weird if you aren't weird to begin with" I wink. I felt better that we both felt the same way.

I laughed, "I like it." I said with a smile. "You are only weird if your aren't weird to begin with." I nodded in agreement. "And we're witches...I don't think it gets much weirder then that."

"I dunno, we could be wizards" I wink, a giggle bubbled out of me.

I laughed with her, "I'm don't think my brother would agree but that is true."

I laugh. "Im sure most guys wouldn't like it" I wink again.

I was still laughing, "True enough." Once I settled down, I took out my textbook. "Okay so match to needle right?"

Pulling out my textbook from my bag, I opened it to the right page. "Thats correct" I smile. "The theory behind this is fairly simply, hence why it is the first transfiguration spell we learn. Wanna give it a try?"

"Yes." I said with a smile. I got out the match we had to practice with. I was about to preform the spell, "What was the wand movement for this one?" There was so many different spells, I was starting to get confused.

Grabbing my wand I performed the movement. "Pretend that your wand is held up by a string. So you are going to drop it a bit then imagine it bring resisted by the string, then let it drop again. Make sure that you are saying the incantation so that it corresponds with the move of your wand. The spell is Igniculus Veracum. So the first part with the first movement, then as you drop you wand again, say the last part." I smile at her with encouragement. "You can do it!"

I smiled at her then concentrated on the match. Mimicking her movements which I now recognized, I repeated the spell, "Igniculus Veracum." The match stayed the same colour but turned into more of a needle shape. I looked up at her with a half smile, "I almost got it." I looked back down, "Now it's your turn."

"Good job! Its areally strong start" I smile at her. Taking out my mathstick, I put it in fromt of me. Taking a deep breath, I center myself, then focus on the match. Raising my wand, "Igniculus Veracum." I was amazed to see that the match transfigured into a shiny sliver needle, my eyes were so wide at the sight.
