"Cathie had sent word to me," I replied honestly. "I wasn't sure if I should come... but I did love your father. I am so sorry to hear that he passed." I looked at my son and could see all that pain in his eyes. It killed me that there was nothing that I could do to try to help ease any of it; I did not even know my own son. It was mainly my own fault, but he and his father were the ones who vanished on me. I could always understand the reasons, even if it broke my heart -- and still did break my heart when I thought of it.
