When Evan had started to show signs of magic, I knew I wanted him.  I wanted a boy to raise.  I could not be there for Jetty and, as a pet rat, I could not do much with the Weasley boys.  Besides, the Weasleys were too Gryffindor for me to be able to lure them to liking the Dark Arts.  I had modified Evan's memory to fit the scenario I wanted for him.  It would be perfect.  I had him with a house elf - Tink - for when I could not be there when I was with the Weasleys as Scabbers.  I was waiting or the little boy to wake up, hoping he would while I was still there tending to certain things.

I woke with a start and sat up in my bed.  Wait?  I had a bed?  Why was there so much light?  I looked around and recognized nothing.  I saw a rather ugly creature leave the room.  "Mummy?  Faith?" I called out, scared.

Tink had come out to tell me that Evan was awake when I heard him calling out.  I walked into the room, a kind smile on my face.  I would get him to trust e by telling him teh only version of his firt five years I woudl let him remember.  "Oh, Evan, thank goodness you're alright!" I said, letting my voice have as much caring emotion in it as possible.

I had gotten out of the bed and was looking around when the man came in.  Mum always kept us away from him when she could.  "Where's my mum?" I asked, taking a step back when he came to give me a hug.

I knew these first few weeks or even longer would be tough.  I looked down at him sadly, sitting down on the end of the bed.  I pat the spot next to me.  "Evan, please, sit next to me," I told him quietly.  "I have some bad news."

I was not sure if Mum would want me to be that closet o him, but he seemed really nice right now.  I sat next to him adn looked at him.  "What bad news?" My voice was quiet and I was worried.  Where was my family?

"You don't remember what you did?" I asked, knowing the exact answer to that.  This was where the memory charm came into play and where the new reality would be told.  It would be saddening, but it was the only way to get Evan to actually trust me.

He was scaring me.  This had to be why Mum always kept us away from him.  I shook my head at him, though.  "I don't.  Will you tell me?" I asked in hushed tones.

I put a hand on his knee.  "Of course I'll tell you.  but, Evan, I want to warn you, it's not good.  And I'm so sorry," I started off.  I wanted him to know and realize that.  I was trying to make it work, but it did not.  James loathed me.  All I wanted was a friendship about just us -- not Sirius -- and Remus may end up being able to join us down the road later.  Lily felt the same way, but I saved her because I loved her.  When she was pregnant, I had hope.  Perhaps we could have been a family, but she wanted nothign of that.  This wa her punishment.  The only bad thing was that Evan looked so much like James -- except his eyes and hair.

I looked at the man, tears coming to my eyes.  "Please... what happened to Faith?  Where my mummy?" I asked.  I was so scared.

"There was an explosion with a lot of fire.  You just developed magic," I explained.  "I barely got you out... you only had a burn on your arm."  I pointed to the bandage on his arm.  I did have to hurt him to make all of this beleivable.  I wiped at my eyes to keep my tears from falling -- I had t keep him to believe this when he looked back on this moment.  My emotion needed to be evident to him in those memories.

What was he saying?  I looked at my arm and then back at him.  "Mum and Faith... are they gone?" I asked, tears coming to my eyes.

i squeezed his knee.  "I'm sorry, Evan.  but I couldn't save them," I told him softly.  "eVerything... was all on fire."  I hated to lie so completely to the young boy about his mother, though it was necessary for things to go as I planned.

Tears came to my eyes and I felt them fall down my cheeks.  Despite Mum saying he was dangerous, I leaned into him and cried.  My family was gone!  "It was my fault?" I asked, looking through my tears at the man who was a stranger to me.

I put my arms around him.  "But you didn't do it on purpose," I said. I wanted him to realize that.  "I'll make sure nothing happens to you.  Lily wanted that -- your mum."  Lily did not knwo what would happen if she angered me and now I had her son.  I was not planning on hurting him anymore than the burn on his arm, though.
